Did you know?

Barbecuing may be the first-ever method of cooking food when our primitive ancestors figured out how to hunt, sharpen a piece of stone to cut their prey into pieces, and build a fire.

Thousands of years later, barbecuing is one of the best ways of cooking food, especially those large slabs of pork and beef.

But before you throw something on the grill, you need to prepare your tools. And yes, there are specific pieces for barbecuing, knives included as well.

And I’ve listed down some of the best BBQ knife sets here for you, as well as some tips on what to look for when you’re shopping for BBQ knife sets.

Let’s take a look.

Buying Guide

See to it that the set includes the essential knives for barbecuing.

The so-called essentials are the multipurpose Chef’s knife, the tapered blade for boning or filleting, a carver or a slicer for even slices, and the all-around paring knife.

It would also be great if the set you’re getting includes a large fork for holding the meat secure on the board while slicing and a honing rod to keep your knife sharp at all times.

Go for the blade made from a good steel blend

The type of steel used dictates all the important features of a blade: hardness, sharpness, flexibility, resistance to wear and corrosion, and longevity.

Although Japanese and German steel is exceptional in quality, it really doesn’t matter where the material was manufactured.

Just go for the brand that makes their steel blend public because that’s the only way you’ll know if it’s any good.

Check the handle

Because you are using this knife specifically for barbecuing, the material used for the handle should be high-quality – it should be easy to clean, can handle high temperatures, and is resistant to moisture, just to name a few.

See to it that the handle is firmly attached to the blade. Remember that barbecuing is an arduous job that requires a heavy-duty tool.

Look at the other design features

A lot of outdoor cooks agree that barbecue knives should have full tangs, heavy bolsters, thick spines, and razor-sharp edges.

If it lacks one, see that the cutler added another feature to substitute that; e.g. instead of bolsters, the knife has a finger guard on the handle.

Bear in mind that, when it comes to knives, good form equals exceptional function.

If it comes with an add-on for storage, get it!

Whether you’re a pitmaster shoveling coal for the grill every day or a home cook who roasts meat on a spit only once a week, having a dedicated storage container for your precious, specialized knives can protect it from wear and tear and make it last longer.

While the stamping is automated, the edges are hand-sharpened and the surface manually polished.

As the name implies, the whole set is given by Fibrox handles, thermoplastic material that is resistant to high temperatures and moisture.

The carving and boning knives are quite sharp, these can be used for raw and cooked food.

The vertical dimples on the carver prevent food from sticking to it so you get perfect cuts every single time.

With just three components in the set, this is possibly the most modest set in the whole list.

Then again, the carver, boning knife, and fork are what you need after barbecuing your meat.

The steel used for their knives has a good mix of carbon and chromium, making this hard, durable, but resistant to stain and rust.

The blades are given a thick bolster (although not full) and full tangs which are wrapped in cylindrical handles.

Mosta used a special plastic material that is resistant to extreme temperatures and offers a non-slip grip for the handles.

All products under this brand are said to be made of X30CR13 – a combination of carbon and stainless steel.

This makes the knives quite hard, slightly flexible, and very durable.

The blades are extremely thin at 1.8 mm and given a Tsuchime or hammered finish for frictionless slicing.

That transitions to a smooth bevel and incredibly sharp edge.

These also have full tangs and cylindrical bolsters which are reminiscent of Asian-style knives.

The handles, well wrapped around the tangs, have slightly curved contours for an easy and comfortable grip.

Only resembling natural wood, the handles are in fact made from PP (polypropylene) material that is impervious to moisture and extreme temperatures.

All of DFACKTO’s knives are made from 5Cr15Mov stainless steel (HRC 57).

Interceptor, the particular series that this collection belongs to, has an interesting design: blades are acid stonewashed so it is resistant to rust and corrosion.

The matte finish is natural so it’s not going to come off when scratched or chipped like coated blades.

While the knives have a decent out-of-factory sharpness, they may blunt quickly. However, it’s pretty easy to re-sharpen.

The full tang is covered in a rugged, tactical-style handle made from G-10 fiber resin.

Aside from the heavy-duty, expandable zipper case as storage, the set comes with individual thermoplastic sheaths for the knives.

Shun’s Kanso is made of solid AUS10A, a type of stainless steel that is high in Carbon and Vanadium used mainly for its durability, corrosion resistance, and amazing edge retention.

This series has a rustic, mottled appearance on the blade’s surface which will age beautifully.

To make the knife lighter, Shun decided not to add a bolster to this particular design.

The curved heel will protect your fingers from accidental nicks.

This is also great for honing your blade from tip to heel.

Tagayasan, a type of wood used as handles for katanas – also graces Kanso blades.

This won’t come off the full tang easily since the treated wooden handle is riveted twice to it.

Our scores:

  • Sharpness: 9/10
  • Handling: 8.5/10
  • Ease of maintenance: 8/10

  • Light, sharp, and long-lasting

Is it okay to use a regular Chef’s knife for slicing barbecued meat?

Although a Chef’s knife is versatile, using a carver or a slicer particularly for large cuts of meat like brisket is better. The vertical dimples on the surface prevent the food from sticking to the blade while the rounded-off tip ensures precise slices.

Can the knives or forks be left on top of or near the grill?

No. While the blades can probably take the heat for a long time, the handles won’t.

Are sheaths important for BBQ blades?

Not necessarily. But if you’re a home cook who barbecues only once a week, you would want extra protection for your knives when you’re not using them.

Can I put my knives in the dishwasher?

No. Even if stainless steel was used for the blades and won’t rust, it’s best to wash these by hand.

Should the knives be honed before use?

Ideally, yes. Honing straightens out the edge of your blade and that helps give you accurate slices every time.

Where is the knife set manufactured?

Shun is from Japan, Victorinox is from Switzerland, and Bolexino is from China. As individually described, some have very little information about the manufacturing company or where their factories are located.

Can I return my knives if these are damaged?

Yes. But take note that most cutlery companies only offer limited warranties so before they repair or replace your knives at no extra expense, they will first investigate the cause of the damage.

You don’t have to be a professional pitmaster to own the best BBQ knife set.

If you love spending your weekends cooking on an open pit, you deserve this too!

Victorinox is a name that denotes quality. And their 7-piece Fibrox Deluxe culinary collection is a great set for those who love barbecuing and outdoor prep and cooking.

Bolexino may not be as popular as Victorinox but many pitmasters are impressed with their creations, particularly the 9-piece grilling set which includes six stamped knives, a fork, a honing rod, and a roll with a handle. Also, this is way cheaper than Victorinox!

Another brand that isn’t that illustrious is Saruma. But their 3-piece fully-forged meat carving set – Granton slicer, boning knife, and large fork included – is one of the best in the market today.

Any of the brands listed above will work for anyone (yes, even for amateurs on the grill) because all of it includes the essential types of blades for this particular activity.

You just need to know which of those you like. Don’t disregard how it feels in your hand.

After all, slicing and dicing aren’t just about sharpness; it’s also about comfort.

Remember that knives are an investment. Choose well.
