Features Of The Shun Classic Cleaver
Because of the steel used in this knife, the blade has a beautiful Damascus pattern that’s very nice to look at.
It also makes it resistant to corrosion and very sharp, but more on that later.
Since this is a cleaver, you can expect it to have a large surface, which it does.
To make it easier to handle and manage, despite its size and weight, Shun put a very nicely finished Pakkawood handle.
This makes for a very comfortable grip on the knife while also giving the user a whole lot of control.
Now, on to the steel that makes up the blade.
It is made in the Damascus tradition, which involves putting multiple different layers of steel on top of a tough core to make a very sharp and durable blade.
The core is made of VG-Max steel, which is one of the toughest steels in modern knife making and is part of the reason this knife is so sought after.
It’s handcrafted and it has a total of 69 micro-layers of steel on top of the car.
This makes for a knife that will not rust easily, will retain its edge for a long time, and can be sharpened to a razor-sharp edge.
In fact, this blade is hand-sharpened to a fine angle that will out-do a lot of the Western-style cleavers on the market today.
While this is a very strong and sharp cleaver, it is not a meat cleaver.
This is one that was designed for vegetables.
While you can use this to slice and chop meat, if you use it on joints and bones, you may risk damaging the knife.
Some customers have complained about this knife being brittle, but that’s usually because they used it for the wrong purposes which resulted in the damage.
If you use it for vegetables and other softer ingredients or make sure not to hit the bone, this cleaver is a dream to use.
It glides through ingredients with ease, it’s easy to control, and the blade is just the right size to make for really easy prep jobs in the kitchen.
Another big plus of this knife is the warranty it comes with.
Like all Shun models, it has a limited lifetime warranty that covers any manufacturing errors that would result in a sub-par product.
You can also have your blade sharpened for free by sending it over to Shun to have it serviced by professionals, all you have to cover is the shipping fees.
Other Customer Reviews
As mentioned earlier, the only real complaint other customers had with this model was it being brittle.
However, that is usually because they used the cleaver for the wrong purposes.
But when used properly, customers from all over the world have been quick to praise this knife for its incredible value, top-quality, and overall attention to detail.
This is a great blade for those looking for a quality vegetable cleaver.
It’s not as large as the Shun Meat Cleaver, but its smaller size can give you a lot more control when chopping.
So if you’ve been on the hunt for a premium, sharp, light, and comfortable vegetable cleaver, you might want to take a close look at the Shun Classic 7” Cleaver, it might just be the one for you.
