In some countries, roasting a whole pig might just be a common backyard activity.

Even though in most cases it’s done during celebrations, this old tradition has somehow become an art, which deserves to be perfected.

The steps are quite easy to follow but the technique is very important when deciding how to roast a whole pig right.

Some people are seasoned veterans at roasting pigs and then some wish they never attempted cooking one in the first place!

If you don’t want yourself to fall into either of these categories, here are some tips on how to accomplish the task:

Decide Whether You Will Need Any Help Or Not

This is one of the most important things when learning how to roast a whole pig because there are lots of different methods that can be applied here and you may require assistance from other people depending on several factors.

If you’re cooking a whole pig for the first time and you don’t have any experience whatsoever, you will likely need some help.

You should also keep in mind that even though roasting a pig is quite easy, it still requires lots of time and patience so you might as well use some company.

Apart from that, roasted pigs are sometimes too big for only one person to carry them after they’re ready so you will need some help.

Pick The Right Roaster

This is also very important when learning how to roast a whole pig.

Choosing the right roaster may spare you from some trouble in the future so it’s worth taking your time and making sure that everything will work well for you.

The way roasters are designed makes them suitable for certain types of pigs and not suitable for others.

You should know beforehand whether or not your roaster can handle a whole farm pig. If you’re buying a used one, there might be other factors to consider too such as whether all elements in it still work properly, etc.

The best thing to do is to ask for advice from a person who has plenty of experience already and knows how it’s done.

Prepare Your Pig Properly

When learning how to roast a whole pig, this stage is often neglected but it shouldn’t be if you don’t want your pig to taste bad during roasting or even after it’s ready.

You should start preparing your pig at least one day before its roasting. This may sound like an exaggeration but there are lots of different things you can do to make the meat taste great while it’s being roasted.

The first step is to make sure that the pig you have will be easy to carve after it’s roasted. You can do this by taking a knife and lightly cutting certain spots.

Now all you need to do is rub some salt into those places. This way some of the juice from inside the meat will remain intact as well as keep your skin from peeling off as you remove it from its body.

Get The Temperature Right!

This may seem obvious but getting the right temperature can be challenging if you don’t know what you’re doing.

If the body gets too hot from the inside, this will lead to overcooking which means that your pig won’t be perfectly roasted.

If you want to get the temperature right, it’s a good idea to do some pre-heat testing before putting your pig into the roaster.

The best way to do this is to buy a special thermometer and measure the temperature in different parts of your pig’s body. This way you will know which specific areas need more heat and which ones need less.

Start Roasting

Now that you’ve done all the steps in learning how to roast a whole pig, it’s time to start roasting!

Make sure that your roaster is up and running and insert your pig inside.

For smaller pigs, roasting will take about 3-4 hours but farm pigs can take up to 7-8 hours so don’t forget this when planning when will be the best time for you to eat.

When it’s done, you can take your roast pig out of the roaster and start serving it! There are lots of different ways to enjoy roast pork which is why many people love this meal.

If you’re not sure how to go about making the dish, there are plenty of recipes online that will give you an idea of how to make great-tasting roasted pork chops or other parts of the pig.
